What families are saying about The Veterinarian Doula

Ashton

I met Emily during a period of great uncertainty in my pregnancy. We were faced with concern for a poor outcome for our child during my second trimester. The pregnancy quickly became clinical, worrisome, and stressful as opposed to a period of cultivation, nurturing, and self-growth. I was desperate for more information about our possible diagnosis and began searching research papers and reaching out to support groups. As a veterinarian, I knew that the high - risk specialists would present possible outcomes objectively- as they are supposed to do; however,  as a mother, experiencing this kind of news was completely frightening. I felt like my child's future and her quality of life were dependent on my ability to make sound decisions about her care based off the information I had.

As I reviewed research, I felt overwhelmed by the real possibility of negative outcomes with my pregnancy and I struggled with knowing what course of action was best of my child. I expressed these concerns through support networks and connected with Emily immediately.

Emily took a significant amount of time during various points of my pregnancy to support and explain the medical concerns I had. We spent time discussing the physiology of what was taking place for my child, and how I could potentially optimize her outcome with nutrition and exercise. Many of my discussions with her were not explored in the hospital setting with the doctors. Shortly after our initial conversations and the changes I implemented, I started to notice positive changes with our weekly scans and monitoring. My child's continued development proved surprising to our entire health care team.  As time went on, the conversations with the specialists became less worrisome and grave and we were able to discuss life after pregnancy. My stress levels decreased and I began to trust the process of pregnancy and what I was doing for my body to support my child. Emily continued to be a support system for me as the pregnancy continued-  she checked in regularly and devised a plan to support my wellbeing in the postpartum period while in turn supporting the specific needs of my child. I felt that being able to connect with someone who spoke the same medical language as I did and who was experienced as a mother and doula working with my specific pregnancy diagnosis helped to provide foresight and trust in a process I had never navigated before. The support she conveys is practical, holistic, and comforting.

I truly feel that having access to Emily's services and continued support made the difference in my pregnancy journey. She has helped me find the courage and bravery I needed to trust my intuition and bring a healthy baby into this world.

We feel like our conversation was really helpful for organizing ourselves and giving us direction. I think we had been sort of overwhelmed into paralysis and prepared to just let things happen, but we came out feeling empowered to make the decisions we wanted.

The other discussion was really helpful for giving us strategies and tools to comfort her and ourselves, which helped assuage the stress and powerlessness that having an inconsolable crier can cause.

In conclusion, we saw a lot of value in the advice provided, the experience that was shared, and just the experience of being heard.

As veterinarians, one requirement of the job is to ask “what do you need?” of creatures who don’t have the words for it. This is the skill Emily brings in her role as doula.  Of course, Emily can walk you through the medicine and the options of childbirth and postpartum. But she goes above and beyond by taking the time to ask the deeper questions of emotion and experience and bring to light that which as a new mom you may not yet have words for yourself.  This help is invaluable in accepting your decisions and appreciating your unique journey in motherhood.  If you’re considering a doula, I highly recommend Emily, the veterinarian doula, for her medical knowledge, her appreciation of the natural biological processes, and her unmatched empathy.
